When photography was new, some believed the magic box with a lens could capture your soul. They weren’t entirely wrong.
An audience responds to the truth of a subject’s personality and character. If a person is sincere and genuine they will give a great interview. If they are not comfortable in their own skin, even the best interviewer will fail to overcome that sense of uneasiness.
In all our work we strive to capture and present the best character of our subjects. You’ve met people who love what they do, who live for the passions they have and who care for others in meaningful and inspiring ways. We find ways to put that on the screen, to make you feel like you have spent time with these people and that you have an understanding of what makes them tick — creating an emotional connection.
What good is a video no one watches all the way through or starts talking about something else when it’s playing? Creating that engagement can be elusive — it isn’t created solely by a great writer or good talent or a big budget or a nice camera. It’s a combination of story, honesty, emotion, editing and pace.
People connect to stories — stories of problems solved, goals achieved, and people's lives made better. Most importantly, emotions are invoked creating lasting impressions.
Engagement also means nothing the audience sees or hears distracts from the message. That means there are no focus problems or other camera issues; there are no sound glitches or tinny audio; nothing in the background is distracting. Information comes in a logical way and at a reasonable pace. Topics aren't belabored and rabbit trails are kept to a minimum. Before they know it, your audience has arrived at your final point ready to take action. That's engagement.
making it easy for CLIENTS
We know you have many things to do and becoming an expert in video production is probably not high on your list. As one of our clients you can have as much or as little involvement in the production process as you have time and interest. Once you feel comfortable that we have a clear and thorough understanding of your vision, you are free to tend to other tasks and wait for us to submit the first version of a program.
And don't worry, we'll be close on that first version. In fact, over 90% of our projects finish at version 2. And most of the time, version 2 represents less than a 10% change from version 1. We're proud of that and we approach each project as an opportunity to use our experience to make the process easy and the final video exceed your expectations.
Brenda Rundback (production manager, lighting director), began in the production industry in 1987 when she started working with David Priest. Having an education in office management, a passion for logistics, and an interest in the creative world, production has provided a career using it all – from the details of painting a scene with light and shadows to seeking the right setting and looks in the scene. Plus having the opportunities to learn about a slew of topics! And, nothing is better for her than being part of a story that can make the world a better place, even if for just one person.
David and Brenda formed Shadow Play Films in 1993 with an initial focus on independent feature films. Over the years, they’ve been principals on productions ranging from short films to documentaries to corporate messaging of all kinds.
Common sense, resourcefulness and being observant are among the necessary tools of production Brenda learned growing up on the family ranch.
“I find I fully engage both sides of my brain with my work and I love it — the Left as the production and office manager and the Right by creating scenes of rich emotion, tone and authenticity through the use of light and color.
My love and respect for the beauty in God's amazing designs in nature began with my growing up on a ranch. Ask me about riding horseback to a one-room grade school.” - Brenda
Soon after David Priest (director, camera, editor) began his career in the 1980’s, he became a key player on hundreds of productions ranging from short films to documentaries to corporate messaging. Keeping on top of quality storytelling and messaging is equal to his attention of using appropriate technology for each project.
His passion for film history began as a young child growing into an extensive knowledge of filmmaking and its evolution. This passion has not wavered and he shares this knowledge with other film enthusiasts through presentations as well as being a mentor.
In 1993, he and Brenda Rundback formed Shadow Play Films. Production has provided them opportunities for exercising creativity and ingenuity, learning about a vast array of topics and national and international travel.
Since his school days, David has known only one career — working full time in the production industry. It goes without saying that David receives much enjoyment from this career.
“For 30 years, I have directed, shot and edited a vast variety of programs. Constantly refining storytelling techniques as well as keeping on top of technology while being a life-long connoisseur of classic films (Grades A-Z) keeps me moving. Other quirky interests include photography, guitars, very
fast cars and vintage chairs.” - David
